The Book of Suffumigations.

Suffumigations, an ancient practice rooted in various cultural and spiritual traditions, involve the burning of aromatic substances to produce smoke with purported purifying or protective properties. Typically employing materials such as herbs, resins, or plant-based compounds like frankincense or myrrh, suffumigations are believed to influence both the physical and metaphysical realms through olfactory stimulation and symbolic transformation. In contemporary applications, this practice continues within aromatherapy and holistic health paradigms where it is valued for its potential to enhance psychological well-being by promoting relaxation and mental clarity. Despite varying scientific opinions on efficacy, the enduring appeal of suffumigations underscores the human inclination towards multisensorial experiences that bridge tangible practices with spiritual beliefs throughout different cultures worldwide.

Suffumigations is the practice of fanning an object through incense smoke in order to purify and consecrate it for a magickal purpose.  The word comes from the Latin verb suffumigare, meaning “to bathe in incense smoke”. It is sometimes aligned with the word Fumigation which means the act of fumigating, or applying smoke or vapor, as for disinfection. Vapor raised in the process of fumigating. Suffumigation is therefore a form of smoke-cleansing attested to in H.C. Agrippa and other European magickal sources.  In Hermetic magical practice, this usually is the name given to the practice of burning different incense types on different days of the week, to different planetary spirits, archangels, angels, celestial spirits in order to honour these entities.
