The Futhark is the oldest form of the runic alphabets. Runic inscriptions are found on artifacts, including jewelry, amulets, plateware, tools, weapons, and, famously, rune-stones, from the 2nd to the 8th centuries.
Futhark is the term used to describe a collection of runic alphabets historically utilized by Germanic peoples, predominantly during the Viking Age and earlier periods. The Elder Futhark, named after its first six letters—fehu (ᚠ), uruz (ᚢ), thurisaz (ᚦ), ansuz (ᚨ), raidō (ᚱ), and kaunan (ᚲ)—is the oldest form, consisting of 24 characters used from approximately 150 to 800 CE across regions now known as Scandinavia and Germany. This alphabet served not only for inscriptions on stone, wood, and metal but also fulfilled roles in magic and divination due to its symbolic significance linked to mythology and cosmology. As linguistic variances emerged with regional developments, so did adaptations like the Younger Futhark with fewer characters tailored to evolving Old Norse languages. Today, scholars study these alphabets to gain insight into early language development, cultural practices, and societal structures prevalent among ancient Northern European civilizations.
A common understanding of runes is that they are primarily a magical or ancient writing system, whereas, in reality, they are just letters of a particular kind. While Futhark, the runic alphabet for magic inscriptions, was used, the examination of Scandinavian Grimoires shows that magick practices possessed their own runes that are equivalents to the characters of Greek and Latin charms. They are signs to which virtue has been attributed because of the esoteric and abstruse character they hold for the average person.
The earliest runic inscriptions found on artifacts give the name of either the craftsman or the proprietor, or sometimes, remain a linguistic mystery. Due to this, it is possible that the early runes were not used so much as a simple writing system as previously indicated, but rather as Sigils that were be used for charms or talismans. The name rune itself, taken to mean "secret, something hidden", seems to indicate that knowledge of the runes as esoteric, or restricted for use by the elite.
