Alchemy
Alchemy is a concept with diverse interpretations, ranging from historical proto-science to a central theme in fantasy and personal transformation. Historically, alchemy was the precursor to modern chemistry and science, aiming to understand the nature of matter and achieve goals like transmuting base metals into gold.
Alchemy was the name given in Latin Europe in the 12th century to an aspect of thought that corresponds to astrology, which is apparently an older tradition. Both represent attempts to discover the relationship of man to the cosmos and to exploit that relationship to his benefit.
